Alternatively titled The Surprising Return of the Summer Uniform.
Hello! I know talking about the weather is boring, but I am so curious if it has been as weirdly hot where you are as it has here! October is usually our first surefire cold month, but it’s been all over the map this year. At press time - end of October - it hasn’t been that unusual for us to have snow, and yet today it’s a balmy 75º. Spooky indeed!
Before we get into how I dressed for this weather anomaly, I want to throw out a few ice breakers and I’d love if you answered them in the comments!
Something I’m reading and liking lately: I just finished Rodham by Curtis Sittenfeld, which was a perfect read for election season, although I could see how it maybe feels a little too close for some. This is fiction and follows what might have happened if Hillary never married Bill. If you enjoy a seasonal read - I do! - there is lots of election talk and politics that aren’t actually our current state that make it a little easier to digest right now.
What I’m most excited for this holiday season: Putting up the lights and tree and having a warm and cozy home. Sometimes the season feels so fast and I’m so busy doing tasks that I don’t get to enjoy it as much as I’d like to. This year, I’m going to lean in whenever I feel like it, even if that’s early, and just bask in the magic. I have young kids, but not like, babies anymore, and every year I think it might be our last Santa year. The youngest still believes, so I’m going to enjoy it while I’ve got it.
Something I bought and liked recently: Built Bars. I keep seeing these protein bars recommended all over IG and the hype is real. It’s witchcraft, but somehow this little candy bar packs 17 grams of protein and still has the texture of a Three Muskateers. I keep one in the freezer and enjoy it for dessert most evenings.

And onward!
Friday // Went into the office for casual Friday, but had to upgrade from my usual WFH yoga pants attire. A crisp black t-shirt and dark wash jeans usually fits the bill.
Jeans - High Rise Straight Leg Jeans - Universal Thread (Target) | these are very good jeans at a bargain price point! TTS - I’m wearing a 6 here - and nice and loose without looking sloppy. And since I’m a millennial, of course I’ve got those babies cuffed.
T Shirt - Slim Fit Perfect Tee (J Crew) | Perfect, indeed. Nobody does classic better than J Crew and this is an elite example of that. I have a few of these t-shirts in my closet and various colors and they never disappoint.
Flip Flops - Similar (Target) | My flops are from J Crew Factory but they’re sold out for the season. I usually stock up on black and tan in the spring, but in the meantime, this set from Target is pretty dang similar.
Sunday // Slob kabob day, which is what we call staying home allllll day long around here. I think I oscillated between reading on my couch, to reading on my bed, to reading in a chair, for the day.
Under Armour Rival Fleece Crew (Under Armour) |
Every Day Soft Ultra High-Rise Leggings (Target) | If you have not heard me speak at the pulpit of best bargain finds, this is my gospet: these are the best leggings on the market and they’re usually $25 or under. They’re soft, seamless, and just high rise enough to make me like I’m wearing a real outfit.
Tuesday // Worked from home and wandered around my house mystified at how hot and nice and summer like it felt. What a treat!
Nike Dri-Fit Fitness Workout T-Shirt (Amazon) | Reader, I do not wear this t-shirt to work out in, so in this case, the name is a misnomer. I find this to be a nice soft t-shirt to wear around the house, and comes in the shade of millennium blue that I have recently made my entire personality.
UA Fly-By 3” Shorts (Under Armour) | See, when I wfh, I like to look like I’m about to break out in a brisk run, but actually, I’m just putzing around my home office. These are my favorite athletic shorts and I have a few different colors. Basics that are in high rotation during the summer months.
Flip Flops - Similar (Target) | My flops are from J Crew Factory but they’re sold out for the season. I usually stock up on black and tan in the spring, but in the meantime, this set from Target is pretty dang similar.
Wednesday // Another WFH day and the return of my official Summer Uniform. Which sounds very formal, but indeed is a Target tank top + an athletic skort. I wore some version of this probably 5 days a week during the summer and I was delighted to break it back out this week.
Active Wear Skort (Amazon) | A good stretchy basic with shorts on the inside, and a skirt on the outside. I champion this for it’s ability to be dressed up or down. Frankly I”d sleep in this sucker because it’s so comfortable.
Slim Fit Ribbed High Neck Tank Top (Target) | At $8, this is an elite basic that comes in so many colors, it’s really easy to wear every single day. And I do. I gravitate to gray, but a good navy, white, and beige are also in heavy rotation. Great for layering if it ever does cool down.
